Dr. Jack Kevorkian gained notoriety by being the first physician to admit publicly that he assisted individuals suffering from painful or debilitating illnesses to die peacefully. Some have called him "Dr. Death" or "Jack the Reaper," while to others he is "Dr. Dignity," a noble humanitarian, and opinion polls overwhelmingly support his efforts. The state of Michigan has attempted to prohibit him from performing assisted suicides, even if it has to imprison him.
