On hundred twenty years before the first Peace Corps volunteers started overseas in the early 1960s, women graduates of Mount Holyoke College, the first women's college in the United States, began in 1840 what was to become an eighty-year commitment to bringing their Evangelical Christianity to Turkey. What Bess Vickery tells are the individual stories of these young women, Mount Holyoke Courageous, many of whom had the faith, personal vigor and health as well as the grit and determination to stay forty or more years.
