Vryonis begins with a critique of the book Turkey in Europe, by then president of Turkey Turgut Ozal. An analysis of the sources, and especially of the assumptions underlying the Ozal thesis, lead Vryonis to Kemal Ataturk's ideas of Turkish cultural origins and nationalist doctrines. The book ends with a survey of Turkish government efforts to impose its views of history in the academic and political establishments of the United States.
