"The Stateless Diplomat: Diana Apcar's Heroic Life," a Documentary by Mimi Malayan

Wednesday, October 2, 2019, 7:00-8:30 pm, at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, 420 West 118th Street  Conference Room 918 (9th floor), New York, NY 10027

Join us for a screening of The Stateless Diplomat, which tells the story of Diana Apcar, a 19th century Armenian writer living in Japan who became the de facto ambassador of the short-lived First Armenian Republic. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Apcar's great granddaughter Mimi Malayan.

Mimi Malayan was born and raised in San Francisco for the first decade of her life. Her family then moved to Europe, the Asian sub-continent and Brazil. Mimi returned to the U.S. to attend George Washington University, where she majored in French Language and Literature. She received her Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of California and went on to practice her trade for 20 years, focusing her professional career on urban parks, plazas and playground design in the San Francisco Bay Area. After finding a box of papers dedicated to Diana Apcar in her uncle’s apartment in 2002, Mimi discovered another interest—uncovering her great-grandmother's life story. Wanting to share it with as many people as possible, Mimi produced the film, The Stateless Diplomat.
