Statement Regarding the Attack on Artsakh (Republic of Nagorno-Karabagh) and Armenia

The National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) joins with all who are deeply concerned and condemn the attack by the Republic of Azerbaijan on Artsakh and Armenia, including the civilian population. The involvement of Turkey in fomenting this aggression is especially alarming. The confrontational rhetoric from Baku and the numerous serious flare-ups along the line of contact with Azerbaijan as well as the cross-border attack carried out by Azeri forces in July of this year were clear warning signs, and the current assault on Artsakh and on Armenia stands contrary to any acceptable international norm. While the peace process has not brought about a long-term solution, it must and should be the only way to resolve the conflict. Hence, we denounce the violence employed by Turkey and Azerbaijan in an attempt to “solve” the conflict.

NAASR has long promoted research and education on the past and present of Artsakh and the conflict with Azerbaijan, and continues to believe that greater knowledge and awareness will lead to a more just outcome for all parties. With the security and integrity—indeed, the continued existence—of Artsakh and Armenia under threat, we call for an end to this belligerent assault and for the international community to promote genuine efforts to reach a peaceful resolution founded on Artsakh’s and Armenia’s right to self-determination and to exist free from the threat of annihilation.
