This book looks at a broad international cross-section of the literary talent cut short by World War I. Some 60 writers from virtually all the combatant nations are represented; there are extracts (translated into English when appropriate) from their work (with, in the case of poetry, parallel texts in English and the original language), authoritative introductory essays, and full biographical and bibliographical details. An appendix lists some 800 writers of all nationalities who are known to have died as a result of World War I.
