Academician Victor Ambartsumyan, an outstanding astrophysicist,. President of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia, director of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, has twice been awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labour, and is winner of the USSR State Prizes. Ambartsumyan was elected President of the International Astronomical Union, and also President of the International Council of Scientific Unions. In recognition of his services to world astronomy, thirty foreign academies, scientific societies, and universities have elected him as an honorary member.
