I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen is Leon Surmelian’s personal tale of deep sorrow and profound gratitude, of terrible loss and a lively embrace of life itself. The out-of-print book, first published in 1945, a bestseller in its time, was internationally acclaimed and translated into many languages.

The Armenian Institute has published a new edition for a new generation.  With added photographs, a map, glossary and historical context, Surmelian’s memoir of his own experiences of surviving genocide and migrating to find shelter is a story that resonates strongly especially today.

Join us for this presentation and discussion of I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen. Considering its place among the many memoirs that have been published since its first printing, our presenters will discuss why they felt it important to bring the book out in a new edition and what it has to offer today.

Richard Anooshian, a retired banker with JP Morgan, is a Trustee of the Armenian Institute, London. He initiated the re-publication of I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Dr. Rebecca Jinks, Lecturer at the Royal Holloway, University of London, is working on a history of Armenian women during the genocide and is Chair of the Armenian Institute trustees.
Dr. Susan Pattie, University College, London, is a cultural anthropologist researching Armenians living in diaspora. She is a founder of the Armenian Institute and currently finishing a term as Director.
