Documenting Monuments in Armenia and Artsakh

Archaeologist Tigran Aleksanyan, Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of NAS RA, reports from the field on his project's progress. Tigran is a recipient of a Knights of Vartan Fund for Armenian Studies grant to support a project to document monuments preserved in the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh associated with the memory of Vardanants' martyrs. NAASR partners with the Knights of Vartan to issue grants.

“I am glad to inform you that the study of Vardanants sanctuaries, supported by the Knights of Vartan fund, is going well. Before beginning fieldwork we have reviewed the published, bibliographic and archival materials, clarified and compiled a list of monuments and the structure of the study. We have studied separately the notion of Vardanants martyrs, the notion of Vardanants sanctuaries, the problems of study of Vardanants sanctuaries, the current state of study of Vardanants sanctuaries.

"Our expeditions have started and have a successful course. Last week we visited chapel-tomb of St. Vardan in Zovuni,  Aragatsotn region, and St. Vartan church in Alapars village, Kotayk region. During this week we organized two scientific expeditions of four different monuments of Vayots Dzor marz, which were built at the Vardanants Martyrs- St. Astvatsatsin church and fortress Koshk,  Yeghegnadzor city, chapel Angeghi, Shatin village, chapel  St. Vardan, Shatin village, and Vardanants church, Artabouynq village."
