It is the first translated version of the work since it was rendered into Russian by K. P. Patkanean in 1861. The translation is based upon the editions of Shahnazarean and Emin in conjunction with manuscripts and lists of variants available outside Armenia representing the two principal groups into which the manuscripts have been divided. The History is the main source of information on the affairs of the Aluank' (the Albani of Classical writers) from the 4th to the `0th century and is of interest also to students of the Byzantine, Sassanian and Arab empires and of the Khazars. Many of the documents assembled by Movses concern the ancient Albanian branch of the Armenian Orthodox Church, Words otherwise unattested in Armenian have been indicated in the notes. The Armenian editions and the Russian translation have long been bibliographical rarities, and the present translation makes the contents of the History more readily available to scholars then hitherto.

(“Albania” in this book does not mean the Albania of today, but instead the present-day Azerbaijan.)

Previously owned

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0860/2240/files/BriefhistoricalandtheoogicalintroductiontotheArmChurchcoverjpg.jpg?v=1770662952
walk-through-the-divine-liturgy-of-the-armenian-church-a-guide-to-the-badarak
Walk Through the Divine Liturgy of the Armenian Church: A Guide to the Badarak

1700th Anniversary Booklet Series - The author has made extensive use of parliamentary papers and those of the Cabinet, Foreign Office, War Office and India office as well as documents produced by pro- Armenian groups during the period. This material is used to build up a detailed and incontrovertible study of British policy, which shows the extent to which it was governed by self-interest even when support for Armenia was its most altruistic. Once Britain secured predominance in the Persian Gulf, she lost all her interest in Armenian territory and the dilemma was posed when the war ended: not only did she no longer need Armenia but also had to decide who to support in Russia. Armenia lost out on all sides and was compelled eventually to adapt herself to the policies of the surrounding countries. This un-killable titan is Mamigon, a soldier/blacksmith whose wife and children are among the countless Armenians slaughtered and mutilated by Turks in 1915. Furthermore, Mamigon's old Turkish army friend, Tallal Bey, is personally responsible for this massacre. So Mamigon, leading a small group of survivors (mostly raped women) to the coast, vows vengeance--miraculously zapping dozens of Turks with his scimitar, repeatedly escaping captivity. And after he has gotten most of his followers to safety, Mamigon sets off alone to kill Tallal, rescuing Turkish girl Guzell from rapists along the way: after he introduces her to sex, super-hero-style (""duration and repetition certain to spoil her for the rest of her life""), she helps him to track down his nemesis in Izmir. But though Mamigon does apparently shoot Tallal fatally in Izmir harbor, Tallal doesn't die. Worse yet, it seems that Guzell has betrayed Mamigon! And so everyone will wind up crossing each other's paths . . . in Boston--where all have arrived as immigrants. (Also coming to Boston: Mamigon's long-lost brother Aram, long-lost friend Tatios, and another nemesis--castrated Turkish assassin Enver Dash.) Over the next few years, then, seaman Mamigon will rediscover, forgive, and marry Guzell; Tallal will try repeatedly to have Mamigon (now a truckdriver) killed, via Enver Dash (both Aram and Guzell will die); Mamigon will find second True Love in the graphically detailed deflowering of schoolteacher Emily; and finally, circa 1921, Tallal will die. . . but not by the hand of Mamigon, who has given up bloodlust-hatred at last. (Plus: an epilogue, 1923-1946, following the career of Mamigon's son and winding up with the murder of Mamigon by Enver Dash.) Aside from the opening sections of sensationalized history, then: routine blood-feud melodramatics--gory throughout, sometimes amateurishly written (""His fleshy wand had decreed a cessation of menstruation in at least a dozen of his transient partners in divan gymnastics""), but undeniably energetic fare for those partial to slash-'em-up action.

by William Saroyan

The "Armenian Trilogy," edited by Dickran Kouymjian, marks a departure in play writing for Saroyan, from theatrics to introspection. The three plays contained in this volume are the most "Armenian" of his writings. "Armenians," the first play, is about countrymen in diaspora, in Fresno, CA in 1921, six years after the last round of atrocities by the Turks against Armenians. Saroyan deals with regional stereotypes and larger issues of diaspora. "Bitlis," is a one-act play that features Bill Saroyan, the Armenian-American writer and his pilgrimage to his ancestral home in what was once Armenia. "Haratch," the most political of the three, Saroyan takes the stage in a visit to the Armenian daily newspaper in Paris. In an attempt to control remote Kurdish populations, Ottoman authorities organized them into a tribal militia and gave them the task of subduing a perceived Armenian threat. Following the story of this militia, Klein explores the contradictory logic of how states incorporate groups they ultimately aim to suppress and how groups who seek autonomy from the state often attempt to do so through state channels.

In the end, Armenian revolutionaries were not suppressed and Kurdish leaders, whose authority the state sought to diminish, were empowered.
