In the Shadow of the Sultan is a historical coming of age novel. It is the story of a boy in his early teens who leaves his home and journeys 200 miles to his grandmother’s town.

The story is set during the summer of 1896 in the Ottoman Empire of Abdul Hamid II. It tells the story of an Armenian boy living comfortably with his family until events lead to his setting off on a long journey with his faithful dog at his side. Along the way he meets various characters some kind  some hostile, some helpful and some helpless, and forms a better understanding of the history of his people. The novel will provide insight into the way Armenians lived at the time. Foreign words have been footnoted and a glossary provided, as well as a list of personal names and their meanings. Short historical notes also guide the reader.
