In sparse and gripping prose, Pierre Verluise uses the accounts of survivors and relief workers to tell the story of this catastrophe in its human and political dimensions. Relying on personal interviews and press reports, he recounts the destruction and despair, the emotional reactions of survivors and relief workers, the political struggles between Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and the Armenians, and the shortcomings in Soviet construction methods and disaster preparedness. Verluise provides insight into human behavior that result from being faced with sudden, massive, and irrevocable loss, and the slow, painful process of rebuilding.

Wayne State University Press (1995)

By Keith Elliot Greenberg

In this book you’ll meet the Asriyans, an Armenian family who left their home in the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan to escape ethnic conflict. Focusing on five specific cases, he exposes the myths about ethnic cleansing, in particular the commonly held belief that the practice stems from ancient hatreds. Naimark shows that this face of genocide had its roots in the European nationalism of the late nineteenth century but found its most virulent expression in the twentieth century as modern states and societies began to organize themselves by ethnic criteria. The most obvious example, and one of Naimark's cases, is the Nazi attack on the Jews that culminated in the Holocaust. Naimark also discusses the Armenian genocide of 1915 and the expulsion of Greeks from Anatolia during the Greco-Turkish War of 1921-22; the Soviet forced deportation of the Chechens-Ingush and the Crimean Tatars in 1944; the Polish and Czechoslovak expulsion of the Germans in 1944-47; and Bosnia and Kosovo.

In this harrowing history, Naimark reveals how over and over, as racism and religious hatreds picked up an ethnic name tag, war provided a cover for violence and mayhem, an evil tapestry behind which nations acted with impunity.

Harvard University Press (2001)

By Andre Shirvanzade / Translated with and Introduction by Nishan Parlakian

Shirvanzade's plays - except for The Princess, which appeared in 1891 - were all written in the twentieth century. And yet, not many scholars have looked either at the religious aspects of modern genocide, or at the manner in which religion has taken a position on mass killing. This collection of essays addresses this hiatus by examining the intersection between religion and state-organized murder in the cases of the Armenian, Jewish, Rwandan, and Bosnian genocides. Rather than a comprehensive overview, it offers a series of descrete, yet closely related case studies, that shed light on three fundamental aspects of this issue: the use of religion to legitimize and motivate genocide; the potential of religious faith to encourage physical and spiritual resistance to mass murder; and finally, the role of religion in coming to terms with the legacy of atrocity.

Berghahn Books (2001)

By Bat Ye'or

In this study of the legal and social condition of Jews and Christians subjected to Islamic rule (the dhimmis), Bat Ye’or examines various religious and historical sources, using the new term ‘dhimmitude’ to describe their common history and legal status. He shows how the struggles that now absorb our attention have been going on for generations and explain much of modern history. Neither side in the cold war grasped this reality, he writes. Neither the liberal myth of the melting pot nor the Marxist fantasy of proletarian internationalism could account for ethnic conflict, and so the international system stumbled from one set of miscalculations to another.

Toward the close of World War I, Woodrow Wilson declared the self-determination of peoples to be an Allied goal for the peace.
